Oil Free, Seed Free, Garlicky Hummus

Oil Free HummusThis very simple hummus recipe is oil free and doesn’t have sesame seeds in it (for those who want to avoid seeds).

I like to cook my garlic a little first so the flavor isn’t as intense. I like garlic, just not raw garlic!  🙂 And I prefer to use garlic cloves instead of garlic powder. I always think fresh is better!

If nightshades are problematic for you, just leave out the cayenne pepper.

I use my Vitamix Blender to make the hummus.  A food processor will work too.

Oil Free, Seed Free, Garlicky Hummus

This tasty hummus is quick to make, is oil free and is made without sesame seeds, for those of us wishing to avoid seeds. Enjoy!

Prep Time 10 minutes
Total Time 10 minutes
Servings 1 cups


  • 2 -4 garlic cloves peeled and diced
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 cups cooked garbanzo beans
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice to taste
  • 3/4 teaspoon sea salt to taste
  • 1/4 cup water more as needed
  • few dashes cayenne pepper optional


  1. Peel and chop the garlic. Use 2 cloves if you like less garlic flavor and 4 cloves if you like more. (If you aren't sure how much garlic you like, prepare all 4 cloves, but put in half the garlic when starting to blend the hummus....adding more later if desired.)
  2. Put the garlic in a microwave safe bowl with the 2 tablespoons water and microwave on 50% power for 1 minute 30 seconds.
  3. Put the garlic and water it was cooked in, the garbanzo beans, lemon juice, salt, 1/4 cup water and cayenne pepper (if using) in a food processor or high powered blender.
  4. Blend for a bit. Check the consistency and add additional water if needed. Taste and add more lemon juice, salt or cayenne pepper if desired along with a heaping spoonful of love and blend a bit longer.
  5. Chill until serving time, or eat right away. I like to make it ahead so the flavors can blend a bit. Enjoy!!!

I like to cook the garlic first in the water because I like the taste of garlic but not the taste of raw garlic!

  1. Dear Tina, did you ever consider eating your hummus / chickpeas in raw / sprouted form? It takes some more patience, but the sprouting throws out more antinutrients and keeps the enzymes alive. Also: another way of preparing legumes in general and keeping them raw (as wel as vitamins and enzymes) is: adding probiotics to them and then wait for a while: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULTNTuraYLQ before eating.

      1. I guess you are not too much interested in probiotics : having read another blog post of yours since you wrote (some) probiotics are not good for histamine intolerant people. Would that be applicable for any probiotic? I can´t imagine this since in our bellies we carry lots of probiotic bacteria ourselves. So some probiotics might be bad for histamine intolerant hosts, but others might even be beneficial I hope / guess?

        1. I think whether or not probiotics help anyone is really individual and figured out by trying them. Reading the various reviews on Amazon for different products….some help one person, but not another.

          In my case, I’ve tried a lot of them. I still have many sitting in my refrigerator. For the most part, they either make me agitated (which i think is related to histamine), or they give me headaches. Occasionally, one will seem to work for me and I’ll take it for awhile…. I was able to take the Jarrow 299V and the Baby Jarrow…..but I discontinued those after awhile for they seemed to lose the benefit I was getting from them.

          Interestingly, I even tried some fermented cabbage recently from our store. Just the smallest amount made me itchy. I suspect it was the yeast in it as even a small amount of nutritional yeast did the same thing.

          I did find something that I like using better than probiotics however. I hope to write a blog post about it soon so stay tuned! 🙂
