Oh Oats……

I am always shocked when I get hit hard after challenging a food.  This time the offending food was oats.

Two days ago I tested oats for the second time.  The first was over two years ago and that didn’t go well so it took me this long to want to try it again.

I ate 2 small spoonfuls of cooked oatmeal (about 1 tablespoon dry) with my dinner. The oats were Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free oats. (Which are delicious by the way.) Within an hour I started to feel kinda anxious, like something was wrong inside, but I dismissed that as maybe being part of my overall illness. Then my knees started hurting when I walked up and down the stairs (that was about 2 hours after eating the oatmeal). Then at 2 1/2 hours my headache started. This was at 9 pm meaning I didn’t sleep well that night. When I did sleep, I had nightmares. Yesterday my left foot started to burn, my head started to burn (nerve pain), and my right hand became painful. I also got a petechiae in my mouth. My heart started to get jumpy too.

I slept better last night, but not after 4 a.m. due to the headache. My knees and hand are better.  My headache *seems* to be gone now (after about 40 hours).

So, no more oats for me.  And that’s sad because I really like them. It amazes me that I had all that trouble from one tablespoon of dry oats!  Geesh! At least I ate a small amount! (I am getting wiser about such things….) 😉

Right now, food wise, I am avoiding corn, nuts, seeds and all animal protein except really fresh fish (eaten rarely). Soy I can eat in small amounts but not days in a row (or my hand hurts). Rice seems to be the only grain I can tolerate.

It’s a bummer not to be able to eat most of the common grains available in the USA (wheat, corn, oats, quinoa).  At least I can eat rice! And of course I can eat my beloved sweet potatoes!

I’ll be retesting berries as they come into season. Hopefully, strawberries and blueberries will work for me this year! (They didn’t last year…)

Wishing you all the best,

  1. Yes, Tina, this is a bummer. I sure hope you can eat those berries later on. Do you have a histamine reaction to canned foods? Do you eat any milk products at all these days?

    1. Hi Rhoda! I seem to do okay with canned foods, but the only canned foods I eat are beans. And I don’t eat much of those unless I’m traveling.

I don’t eat milk products. When I did eat some (eg during my colonoscopy prep) I ended up with significant nerve pain and lots of oral petechiae.

  2. Just wanted to thank you for such a great blog! I have been going down a quite similar 3-year elimination diet/food challenge path. I’m very pleased I just stumbled across your site and will enjoy reading more. As you know, this is so frustrating but I hope you can share my laugh, that although we have many triggers in common, oatmeal and milk are two of my only truly safe foods that I can eat every day with no consequences. Best wishes to you on this journey!

    1. Thanks for writing Wendy!!!! I am SO glad you can eat oats! I truly love them, but my body apparently doesn’t like them at all! Make sure you eat a nice bowlful of oats for me! Thanks for writing and good luck with being able to add more foods to your diet!!! 🙂
